Today I don’t want to talk about the big games of the week, but focus on one in particular that, to me, captures a way of winning we rarely see in SoloQ: a detailed look at a Gambit vs GIANTS! match.
Digging into this game we’ll see 4 keys to winning any matchup that tend to be underrated in favour of things like out-skilling your opponent, ganking, or team composition. Don’t get me wrong — all of that matters, but today we’ll look at other aspects.
Secret 1: off the meta
We all know games start at champion select, and much of League of Legends strategy lives in that phase. We tend to assume the most common competitive picks (the “meta”) are always the best. But that’s not always true: sometimes stepping slightly off the beaten path is a very good idea.
Picking an off-meta champion wasn’t random — it was deliberate: it offers strong answers to certain compositions, unsettles the opponent through surprise, and fits the team’s strategy. Sometimes what you need is exactly what nobody expects.
Secret 2: play the map
What does “play the map” mean? Paying special attention to objectives that don’t directly involve your rivals: towers, dragon, baron, inhibitors, vision, buffs, scuttle crab… It’s striking to realise that something as simple as killing a ward or taking a tower is worth more of a gold swing than a kill.
In the game we analyse, one team took everything: every dragon and baron, and at no point did the opponent have more towers. That translates into an ever-growing gold lead — far bigger than what kills provide.
Secret 3: stay alert!
It’s incredibly important to watch what your rivals do and why. If your opponent hasn’t shopped yet and you have, you can pressure them and force them to lose farm. If they haven’t backed in a while, maybe they want a big item or feel pressured in lane.
Very often we don’t think about what the opponent is doing. Bought a cheap component? They probably want an expensive item and will have to farm a lot. Vanishing soon after getting to lane? They’re likely in the jungle or setting up a gank. It sounds simple, but how often do we actually stop to think about it?
Secret 4: if it’s free, take it
No joke: this is the big secret, and the one we all forget. When the rival who was bothering you backs, we think “what a relief” instead of “I won’t just push the wave — I’ll gank, I’ll get the most out of this window because there’s no pressure on me”.
Same when the enemy mid dies and the rest escape on low health: “how lucky they are” instead of “they’ll have to back — free dragon for us”. We miss so many small opportunities, game after game.
And that’s what one of the teams showed they master like few others: seizing, without hesitation, every chance the opponent offered. Maybe it wasn’t a game of spectacular plays, but they knew exactly what they were playing for — the patient, strategic game — and the opponent never stood a chance.
